Ammonia history and technical comparison between ammonia, R22 and new refrigerants.

Author(s) : CAVALLINI A.

Summary

The use of ammonia as a refrigerant, as compared to the use of competing synthesised fluids, is discussed. Favourable features and drawbacks are considered with reference to different refrigeration applications. Main advantages of ammonia are: low molecular mass; good intrinsic thermodynamic and heat-transfer properties; compatibility with trace water; very low comparative cost; complete environmental compatibility. Unfavourable features of ammonia are: toxicity; moderate flammability and incompatibility with copper, zinc and their alloys. Some possible innovative applications of ammonia refrigeration are briefly examined.
