Summary

CO2 transcritical vapour compression systems are more susceptible with the refrigerant charge amount. This aspect becomes more important when the system operates with the capillary tube expansion valve. In this study, the performance of a prototype CO2 heat pump system was investigated under varying refrigerant charge amount employing a capillary tube as an expansion device. At a given gas cooler and evaporator inlet water temperature, charge amount sensitivity was tested. The COP of the CO2 heat pump system was reduced more significantly at undercharged conditions than at overcharged conditions. Despite increase in the charge amount, suction superheat decreases while compressor power increases.
