Summary

MCINTOSH APPLES IN THIS STUDY, REPRESENTED A WIDE RANGE OF VALUES FOR NITROGEN, PHOSPHORUS, POTASSIUM, MAGNESIUM AND CALCIUM IN THE CORTICAL FLESH AND SHOWED SIGNIFICANT AMONG-STATION DIFFERENCES IN FLESH FIRMNESS AT HARVEST. FLESH FIRMNESS OF APPLES STORED IN CA UNTIL JUNE WAS NEGATIVELY CORRELATED WITH CALCIUM, CALCIUM/PHOSPHORUS AND CALCIUM/POTASSIUM, AND WAS POSITIVELY CORRELATED WITH FRUIT PHOSPHORUS AND POTASSIUM AND WITH FLESH FIRMNESS AT HARVEST. IN COMPARISON WITH CA (NOMINAL 3% O2, 1.5-5.0% CO2 ), LOW OXYGEN ATMOSPHERES (1-1.5% O2, 0-1.5% CO2 ) DECREASED FLESH SOFTENING, FREQUENTLY DECREASED CORE FLUSH, SOMETIMES CAUSED LOW OXYGEN INJURY, AND DID NOT SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE SENESCENT BREAKDOWN.
