Analysis of a R744 two-phase loop thermosiphon applied to the cold end of a Stirling cooler.
Author(s) : ZIMMERMANN A. J. P., MELO C.
Summary
This work focuses on an experimental investigation of a R744 thermosiphon loop designed to fulfil the geometric and temperature requirements of a specific FPSC (free piston Stirling cooler). An experimental apparatus, based on a closed loop wind tunnel, was developed and used to vary the evaporator inlet air temperature, the evaporator airflow rate and the condenser internal surface temperature. Tests were carried out varying the temperature difference between the heat source, i.e. the air at the entrance of the evaporator and the heat sink, i.e. the internal surface of the condenser, the refrigerant charge and the evaporator airflow rate. The experimental results were explored using the thermal conductance concept applied to each heat exchanger and also to the whole loop. It was found that the loop was able to carry a maximum heat transfer rate of 514 W with a heat source-sink temperature difference of 11°C. A numerical model, based on the mass, energy and momentum first principles was also developed. A consistent agreement between calculated and measured data was achieved, with 85% of the calculations being within a plus or minus 20% error band.
