Summary

EXERGY LOSSES HAVE BEEN CALCULATED FOR DIFFERENT OPERATING CONDITIONS IN A CONVENTIONAL REFRIGERATION CYCLE WITH SINGLE STAGE COMPRESSION. THE REFRIGERANTS CONSIDERED ARE R717, R12 AND R22. THE TOTAL ISENTROPIC EFFICIENCY OF COMPRESSION, AS A FUNCTION OF THE EVAPORATING AND CONDENSING PRESSURES, HAS BEEN DERIVED FROM PERFORMANCE DATA FOR A SERIES OF RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS MANUFACTURED BY AN ITALIAN FIRM. DIFFERENT METHODS OF IMPROVING THE CYCLE EFFICIENCY ARE CRITICALLY DISCUSSED, IN PARTICULAR THE AUTHOR STRESSES THE POSSIBILITY OF REDUCING EXPANSION LOSSES WHICH CAN BE ACHIEVED BY MULTISTAGE ISENTHALPIC EXPANSION OR, MORE PROFITABLY, USING A COMPRESSOR TO REDUCE THE PRESSURE OF THE CONDENSED LIQUID PERIODICALLY COLLECTED IN VESSEL WHERE EXPANSION IS ALMOST REVERSIBLE.
