Summary

An active corrugated cardboard container has been developed for the bulk packaging of fresh tomatoes using essential oils (EOs) encapsulated in ß-cyclodextrins (ß-CD) that were incorporated in the waterproofing coating of the cardboard. These EOs in the form of vapor were released from the surface of the cardboard once the product was packaged and stored in a cold room at high relative humidity (RH), acting as a decontamination agent of the fruit surface. This work shows that the use of the encapsulated combination of EOs carvacrol-oregano-cinnamon (70:10:20), in a dose of 300 mg EOs / m2 of cardboard, results in a significant reduction of the microbiology, and a significant increase in the shelf life of fresh tomato packed in this type of active packaging, if compared with the same tomato preserved in conventional cardboard crates (control).
