Application of PIV technology to superfluid He II thermal counterflow jet.

Summary

The PIV (particle image velocimetry) technology was applied to the measurement of superfluid helium fluid dynamic phenomena. Solid H-D particles, being neutrally buoyant in superfluid helium, are used as tracer particles. The average velocity of the jet, the velocity distribution and the vortex ring shedding immediately after the onset of heating were measured. It is seen that the average velocity distribution is in fairly good agreement with that of a fully developed turbulent jet of ordinary liquids. It is an interesting finding that the average velocity distribution is rather of a top-hat form in the case of very small velocities.
