Assessment of compressor compatibility with alternative working fluids to HFC-134a in domestic refrigerators.

Author(s) : ASTHANA S., WALE R.

Summary

'Drop-in' working fluids for the domestic refrigerator are focus of research in developing countries like India where the useful life of a refrigerator is about twenty years, which is past CFC phase out commitment as per the Montreal Protocol. After analysing the different working fluids based on their thermodynamic properties, HC-290/HC-600a and FC-218/HFC-134a/HC-600a were focused for the study to assess their suitability as drop-in working fluids in domestic refrigerators. The most important component, compressor is tested for its chemical and material compatibility as per the Life Cycle Test. Result revealed that both the compressors with said combinations of refrigerant and lubricating oil have passed the test. FC-218/HFC-134a/HC-600a/MO combination showed slightly better results then HC-290/HC-600a/MO combination but HC-290/HC-600a is environmental friendly as compared to FC-218/HFC-134a/HC-600a having slightly high GWP. However, there is no commitment to phase out HFCs in near future by the government of India and FC-218/HFC-134a/HC-600a/MO can be safely used as a drop-in substitute.
