Summary
THE MAJORITY OF OIL SARDINES ARE CAUGHT BY PURSE SEINERS, LANDED WITHOUT USING ICE AND ARE OFTEN WASHED IN SEA WATER TO IMPROVE APPEARANCE, LEADING TO BACTERIAL ATTACK. THE AUTHOR GIVES DETAILS OF A CHILLED WATER SYSTEM FITTED TO A PURSE SEINER, 12,5 M LONG WITH A CAPACITY OF 8 T. THE TANK WAS INSULATED WITH STYROFOAM AND LINED WITH GLASS REINFORCED POLYESTER. A NUMBER OF VESSELS HAVE BEEN CONVERTED LEADING TO A PRODUCT WHICH IS MORE SUITABLE FOR CANNING, AND GIVES A GOOD RETURN ON THE CAPITAL INVESTMENT. G.R.S.
