Summary

HCFC-22, accepted as the most suitable refrigerant for air conditioners, has to be phased out due to its ozone-depleting potential. Hence, phasing out of ozone-depleting refrigerants has led to the quest for ecofriendly alternative refrigerants. Thermodynamic analyses for some of the refrigerants such as HFC-407C, propane, propane-isobutane mixture were made against that of HCFC-22, along with a comprehensive literature review. Of all the available alternative refrigerants, HFC-407C could be a candidate refrigerant for retrofitting. However, the performance of an air-conditioning system could be further enhanced with the addition of an HC blend to it.
