HCFC22 phase out in North America: impact on future equipment production.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The scheduled phase out of HCFCs in 2020-2030 has required that manufacturers in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry begin to identify alternative fluids. In North America, where R22 is the most widely used refrigerant, future unitary air conditioners and heat pumps will have to be designed to accept the alternatives that replace R22. During the same time frame (post-2000), new US regulations are expected to increase the minimum efficiency that these unitary systems must achieve. The combination of new refrigerants and higher efficiencies will require system engineers to rethink unitary equipment designs. The article reviews the options for new refrigerants and discusses the impact of some of these options of future equipment design.
