Type of article: Article

Summary

BITTER PIT IS A PHYSIOLOGICAL DISORDER INDUCED IN THE ORCHARD AND APPEARING IN COLD STORAGE. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE SYMPTOMS OF BITTER PIT GENERALLY APPEARING ON RIPE APPLES; THEY ARE DIFFERENT FROM THOSE OF CORK SPOT DUE TO BORON DEFICIENCY. ALL APPLE VARIETIES DO NOT HAVE THE SAME SENSITIVENESS TO BITTER PIT WHICH, AFTER NUMEROUS AUTHORS, MAY BE DUE TO CALCIUM DEFICIENCY. THE ABSORPTION OF THIS IS SUBJECTED TO THE ANTAGONISM BETWEEN ELEMENTS SUCH AS POTASSIUM AND MAGNESIUM. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES PREVENTIVE MEASURES CONSISTING IN MAINTAINING A GOOD NUTRITION EQUILIBRIUM OF APPLES IN THE ORCHARD: DIRECT CONTROL IS PROVIDED BY AN ADDITION OF CALCIUM TO THE SOIL, BY SPRAY ON LEAVES AND BY IMMERSION OF FRUIT IN A SOLUTION CONTAINING 2% CALCIUM CHLORIDE.
