Bulk packaging of artichokes.

Summary

The effect of bulk packaging on the quality of artichoke heads was investigated. Three types of polypropylene films including two microperforated films MP1 and MP2 were used. Tree replicates of about 8 kg each of artichoke heads were packaged into bags and placed in a carton. All samples were stored at 5 °C for 4 days, followed by 3 days at 15 °C for simulating a retail sale period. The atmosphere composition inside the microperforated packages rapidly changed to reach 2% O2 and 9% CO2, in MP1 bags and 18% O2 and 4% CO2 in MP2. For artichokes stored in perforated poly propylene, weight loss was 6%, while for MP1 and MP2 it was 2.2 and 3.9% respectively. After the shelf life, visual quality was considered very good for samples kept in MP2 bags.
