CALCULATED OSMOMETRIC RESPONSES OF HUMAN GRANULOCYTES DURING FREEZING.

Author(s) : MCGANN L. E.

Summary

THE VIABILITY OF HUMAN GRANULOCYTES AFTER FREEZING-THAWING DEPENDS ON NUMEROUS FACTORS INCLUDING THE WATER PERMEABILITY OF THE CELL. THE FREEZING OF EXTRACELLULAR WATER INDUCES A QUICK EFFLUX OF INTRACELLULAR WATER. THE VOLUME CHANGE OF GRANULOCYTES SUBJECTED TO OSMOTIC SHOCKS WAS MEASURED, THE PERMEABILITY COEFFICIENT OFGRANULOCYTES WAS THUS DEDUCED. THIS COEFFICIENT DEPENDS ON TEMPERATURE. IT IS POSSIBLE TO CALCULATE THE PROBABILITY OF INTRACELLULAR FREEZING IN TERMS OF COOLING RATE. INTRACELLULAR FREEZING IS LIKELY TO OCCUR AT COOLING RATES ABOVE 30 K/MIN.
