CANADA'S QUIET REVOLUTION IN FISH HANDLING.

Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

TRADITIONAL FISH HANDLING METHODS OF STOWING, DISCHARGING AND TRANSPORTING IN INSHORE FISHERIES RESULTED IN EXCESSIVE QUALITY DETERIORATION AND WASTE. QUALITY LOSS WAS ATTRIBUTED TO A SHORTAGE OF ICE, HANDLING PRACTICES AND POOR SANITATION ON VESSELS, LANDING SITES AND ON TRANSPORTATION VEHICLES. AN ICE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMME RESULTED IN COUNTRYWIDE INSTALLATIONOF ICE MAKING FACILITIES. FISH HANDLING WAS IMPROVED BY THE USE OF NET BAGS CONTAINING ABOUT 500 KG OF FISH. INSULATED CONTAINERS WERE DEVELOPED FOR STORAGE AND TRANSPORT OF FISH BOTH IN ICE AND CHILLED SEA WATER, AND 50,000 ARE NOW IN USE. SYSTEMS FOR USING INSULATED CONTAINERS ON BOARD FISHING VESSELS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED ALTHOUGH THEY LIMIT THE STORAGE CAPACITY OF THE VESSEL. G.R.S.
