A NEW BANANA RIPENING FACILITY AT CAPE TOWN HAS 19 GASTIGHT INSULATED ROOMS COOLED BY ROOF-LEVEL AIR-COOLERS ABOVE END PLENUMS HOUSING THE FANS. COLD AIR IS BLOWN AT FLOOR LEVEL TO RISE THROUGH THE STACKED PALLETS OF BOXED BANANAS. COOLING IS BY AN AMMONIA PLANT SERVED BY TWO RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS, AN EVAPORATIVE CONDENSER, AND FLOODED EVAPORATORS. THE ROOMS ARE SUPPLIED WITH ETHYLENE TO TRIGGER THE RIPENING, ROOM TEMPERATURE BEING CONTROLLED THROUGH MOTORISED EVAPORATOR PRESSURE REGULATORS. ALL TEMPERATURES ARE MONITORED AND RECORDED UNDER A COMPUTERISED CONTROL SYSTEM. THE ROOMS CAN BE USED ALSO FOR COOLING OTHER FRUIT WITH THE AIR CIRCULATION REVERSED. D.W.H.
