CFC replacement in new and existing systems: long term fluids and practical retrofitting with HCFCs.

Summary

A complete range of CFC alternatives is readily available in the field of refrigeration and air-conditioning, both for new and for existing systems. For new systems, it is recommended to use "long term" fluids, having zero ozone depletion potential (ODP), such as R134a, R404A and R407C. Indeed, HFCs have the same properties for which CFCs have long been favoured by the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry: non flammability, low toxicity and high stability. When other options such as hydrocarbons or ammonia are considered, the best one must be chosen in front of today's environmental and safety requirements. For existing systems, a range of HCFC blends has been developed which can be used as straight replacements of CFCs, with performance match or improvement, and no system modification, thus minimizing retrofit issues. The authors demonstrate practical examples or R12 and R502 replacement in the field of domestic, transport and commercial refrigeration, by using R409A-R408A.
