CO2 as a refrigerant for cooling of data-center: a case study.

Number: pap. ID144

Author(s) : SOLEMDAL Y., EIKEVIK T. M., TOLSTOREBROV I., et al.

Summary

A data-center, which is equipped by an indirect refrigeration plant (R410A), was analyzed in this study. The system has a free cooling circuit for cooling the data equipment when outside temperature is less than 4.0°C. The result of simulation showed that the plant was running part-load all year, instead of full-load which was designed by supplier. Average coefficient of performance was between 2.6 and 2.9. Two different CO2 systems were suggested as an alternative to the existing plant. One of the CO2 systems was a direct system; the other one was a filled indirect system. Indirect system has free cooling circuit, which decreases energy consumption of the system. Simulation of the CO2 systems showed that the direct system used 52.0 % of the energy when compared with todays’ system, while the filled system used 29.0 % of the energy which is consumed by the existing system.
