Summary

The present work investigates the impact of an ejector module on the performance of a CO2 compressor pack for supermarket applications. The European ecodesign criteria for condensing units were used as a framework to test and assess the performance of the system with and without active ejector, in terms of both capacity and energy efficiency. Seasonal energy performance ratio calculations were used to compare the test results. Results showed that at high ambient temperature the ejector increases the system capacity and efficiency by up to 34% and 24% respectively, thus enabling the downsizing of the compressor pack. However, the seasonal efficiency improvement was less than 5% at conditions corresponding to Northern Europe. Conditions corresponding to a high heat recovery demand in winter were also evaluated, which showed an increase in seasonal heating efficiency of up to 21%.
