TO EVALUATE THE PERFORMANCE OF SUCH TUBES UNDER FIELD CONDITIO NS, THE STANDARD FINNED TUBES OF ONE OF THE TWO 250-TON (880 KILOWATTS) WATER CHILLERS IN A BUILDING HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY SPECIFIC ENHANCED FINNED TUBES FOR COMPARISON. IN EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED OVER A PERIOD OF 3 YEARS AND APPROXIMATELY 9,000 OPERATING HOURS, THE USE OF ENHANCED FINNED TUBES IMPROVED THE UA VALUE (PRODUCT OF THE GLOBAL HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT BY THE EXTERNAL SURFACE OF THE EXCHANGER) IN THE CONDENSER BY AN AVERAGE OF 60% AND IN THE EVAPORATOR BY AN AVERAGE OF 40%. THE AUTOMATIC BRUSH CLEANING SYSTEM IN THE CONDENSERS KEPT THE WAVY INSIDE SURFACE OF THE ENHANCED TUBES JUST AS CLEAN AS THE PLAIN INSIDE SURFACE OF THE STANDARD FINNED TUBES. FOR THE SAME HEAT DUTY, THE UNIT WITH ENHANCED FINNED TUBES PROVIDED HIGHER EVAPORATING TEMPERATURE AND REDUCED CONDENSING TEMPERATURE COMPARED TO THE UNIT WITH STANDARD FINNED TUBES. A CHILLER HAVING ENHANCED TUBES IN BOTH EQUIRE 13% LESS COMPRESSOR POWER. THE COST OF RETUBING THE SYSTEM WAS AMORTIZED WITHIN 2 YEARS.
