Computer evaluation of thermal and transport properties of unsaturated soils.

Summary

The paper describes an extended and modified version of the De Vries model for predicting thermal and hydraulic properties of soils having log-normal grain size distribution. The extended model predicts soil thermal conductivity, specific heat and soil hydraulic properties in a full range of moisture content (from dryness to saturation) and a temperature range from -30 to 95 deg C. The user may select a desirable unit system (SI, USCS, cgs) and a way of declaring soil moisture content (volumetric or mass basis). Testing results gathered to date suggest that this model works well for most coarse- and many medium-textured soils, but the predictions for fine-textured and most structured soils could in some cases be questionable.
