Computer modelling of an open cycle CO2 transport refrigeration system.

Number: pap. n. 20

Author(s) : KENNEDY P., ESMONDE H., YOUNG P.

Summary

This paper presents a model for an open cycle CO2 system using a switched moving boundary technique based on those used previously for vapour compression systems. Improvements over the linear model for the superheated zone model were integrated along with the introduction of heat transfer coefficient calculations specifically for CO2. Modeling of the pressure drop within the evaporator coil was presented along with a model of the back pressure regulator that maintains the pressure in the coil above the triple point of CO2. Static and dynamic tests were carried out on an experimental system and the results were compared with several test cases to demonstrate the improvements and validate the modeling approach.
