Summary

The Council of Europe has just reached an agreement on the future "F-Gas" regulation whose objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, by harmonizing practices in the various countries. This regulation particularly concerns HFC-type gases. It aims at guaranteeing the use of HFC-type refrigerants in the future by improving circuit tightness and technician training. This text should soon come into force, at the time when, for certain materials used in air conditioning, the material manufacturers have bet on R410A, an HFC-type refrigerant, which enables the achievement of better performance, while reducing machine size. R410A is a fluid which is currently mastered for increasingly high capacities. This new evolution takes place in a worldwide context of rising refrigerant prices. This should continue in 2005. The environmental constraints also have an impact on secondary refrigerants, used in indirect installations, in particular to limit the refrigerant quantities circulating in the buildings. New products may still be discovered, following the example of Thermera, a secondary refrigerant derived from the processing of sugar beet.
