Contribution to safety aspect discussion on isobutane compressors for domestic refrigeration.

Summary

A basic study on isobutane/air flammability behaviour was conducted. The effect of using flammable refrigerants in current hermetic compressors for household refrigeration was tested. The authors conclude that the compressor shells are strong enough to withstand internal explosion and have an extremely low probability of leakage. Small modifications in electrical components can eliminate the possibility of spark generation around the compressor shell.
