THE AUTHOR SURVEYS THE REACTION IN JAPAN TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE MONTREAL PROTOCOL ON OZONE LAYER DEPLETION. THE STEPS TAKEN ARE IN GENERAL COOPERATION WITH OTHER COUNTRIES. ALTERNATIVES HCF134A AND HCFC123 ARE COMING INTO COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION AND HCFC225CA/CB IS BEING USED AS A CLEANING SOLVENT, THE LARGEST SINGLE USE FOR A CFC IN JAPAN. RECOVERY, RECYCLING AND INCREASED CONTAINMENT OF CFCS ARE BEING PRACTISED AND FURTHER RESEARCH IS IN PROGRESS INTO FUTURE ALTERNATIVES. SPECIFIC INFORMATION IS GIVEN ON REFRIGERANTS, BLOWING AGENTS, AEROSOL PROPELLANTS AND CLEANING AGENTS. D.W.H.
