Cooling and carbon dioxide treatment of strawberries and grapes by dry ice.

Summary

Strawberries on pallets should be cooled within two hours after harvest. Prototypes of a rapid cooling unit based on use of dry ice have been developed and tested on grapes and strawberries. The units need only fan power of 600 W per pallet and performed 3500 W cooling. Air temperature and core temperatures of produce at different location in the pallet have been monitored. The average half cooling time was 33 minutes, as measured by core temperature. The cooling units can be used in the field supported with a gasoline electrical power unit to support the fans. Transport and storage of dry ice can be effected in insulated containers on ordinary trucks.
