Summary
The Channel Tunnel is the first refrigerated tunnel in the world. It had to be cooled since there is no possibility for ventilation with outside air except at the two ends of the 50 kilometers, and temperatures in the middle would have otherwise reached 80 deg C. Different schemes were considered, and the one eventually chosen was the simplest: chilled water passing through pipes running half the length of the tunnels and back and served by individual cooling systems in France and England. It was chosen since it can be turned down or off during cold periods, requires a minimum of equipment and is a closed system, thus avoiding any contamination. R22 and the York Series "M" Turbomaster multi-stage centrifugal compressor were chosen. System configuration is described, and energy-saving features are listed.
