Summary

The survival of seven strains of Pseudomonas spp. and seven strains of Arthrobacter spp. following ultrarapid freezing at a cooling rate of 400 K/min in water suspensions and in soil was studied. All the pseudomonas tested survived freezing in water better than freezing in soil, whereas the reverse was true for arthrobacters. Mixing culture suspensions prior to freezing in some cases enhanced recovery of arthrobacters (threefold) from frozen water suspensions and recovery of pseudomonas (twofold) from soil.
