Summary

Rapidly dried, whole Wasabia japonica cv. "Daruma" seeds, with or wthout cryoprotectants, can tolerate exposure to liquid nitrogen without adverse effects on germination. Seeds were desiccation-tolerant (at least for short periods) when rapidly dried and did not require cryoprotectants at seed moisture levels of approximately 0.17 gramme H2O/gramme dry weight. Drying the seeds at a slow rate negatively affected seed viability. A rapid rate of drying, on the other hand, did not damage seed viability.
