Summary

HYDRATED ZEA MAYS SEEDS ARE STORED AFTER RAPID FREEZING IN LIQUID NITROGEN. DIFFERENT CRYOPROTECTANTS (1,2-PROPANEDIOL, DMSO, GLYCEROL AND SUCROSE) ARE USED AND THEIR EFFECTS ARE COMPARED: 1,2-PROPANEDIOL ADDED WITH SUCROSE APPEARS THE LEAST TOXIC CRYOPROTECTANT FOR THENON-FROZEN CONTROLS AND AT A HIGH CONCENTRATION (5 M), IT IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE PROTECTANT FOR DAMAGE-FREE STORAGE OF SEEDS IN LN2.
