Summary

Shoot apices of in vitro grown yam were cryopreserved using the encapsulation-dehydration technique. Maximum survival of frozen apices (up to 71%) was obtained when alginate-coated apices were precultured for 3 days in liquid medium with 0.75 M sucrose followed by 4 hours of desiccation in sterile air-flow, rapid freezing and slow thawing.
