Summary
Solar energy is considered a clean and promising source of energy. The vapor compression heat pump technology is identified as the most suitable and efficient method to fulfill both cooling and heating needs. Researchers have acknowledged the potential of combining these two technologies to pave the way for sustainable energy solutions and achieve a zero-carbon footprint. This study provides a detailed overview of the current research progress in solar-assisted vapor compression heat pumps. Various configurations utilized in the research and their performances are thoroughly analyzed. Progress in the design of heat pump subcomponents, solar energy systems, and energy sources is also examined. Key performance indicators are highlighted and discussed. The study delves into the investigation of different refrigerants, both natural and synthetic, and their performances. The potential of transferring low-temperature research findings to high-temperature applications is also explored. It can be noted that the trend of the outcome of low-temperature HP research is supporting the HTHP research to a remarkable level. Additionally, an in-depth economic analysis is conducted to assess the cost benefits of integrating various solar energy systems with heat pump systems. An environmental assessment is carried out to determine the potential reduction in emissions. The integration of solar energy systems into HP systems proves to be beneficial for both economic and environmental attributes. Lastly, the study outlines the future development directions for these technologies.
