Summary

A review is presented on the problem of cold and osmotic sensitivity of cells related to the gel nature of their cytoskeleton. Dehydration is considered as a primary factor of cold and osmotic injury. Taking into account the gel nature of cytoskeleton, such factors as osmotic pressure, ionic strength, pH and temperature are of primary importance. The conception of the living cell as a system whose structure is gel seems to be promising for a more comprehensive analysis of cryobiological phenomena.
