Summary
The paper presents the state of the art of refrigerated storage with reference to both refrigerating circuits and warehousing operation. The author's view is that, for environmental reasons, ammonia is regaining an important role in refrigeration. Different options and techniques for automated storage and retrieval are described. Particular emphasis is given to the integrated design of the refrigerated storage system, which is an unitary design procedure that takes the interactions between the different components into account.
