Summary

Operating a heat pump with an internal combustion engine offers the possibility of utilising two heat sources at different temperatures: condensation heat is available at a rather low temperature (eg 50 deg C), while the heat recovered from the engine is at a higher temperature (eg 90 deg C) and can serve also to defrost finned coil evaporators, in addition to being used for heating service. Several installation schemes (with or without an auxiliary boiler) are reviewed and discussed with special attention to the problem of controlling thermal outputs. E.F.
