The effect of modified-atmosphere conditions and packaging materials on the shelf life of sweet cherries.

Summary

The aim of the work undertaken in the study was to determine the effect of different modified-atmosphere conditions and packaging materials on the shelf-life of sweet cherries. After their harvest, sweet cherry samples were transported, and within 10 hours packaged by applying the passive and active modification modes. Some of them were stored unpackaged. The sweet cherries were then placed into a storage room and maintained at 0 deg C. Gas composition analyses of the internal atmosphere were carried out throughout the storage period. Quality parameters were studied during the same period. As a result of the study the shelf-life of unpackaged control sweet cherries was found to be comparably shorter (25%) than those of sweet cherries under modified-atmosphere conditions. More details are given.
