BACKGROUND HISTORY ON THE EARLIER USE OF COLD WATER, SNOW, ICE AND DEEP CAVES FOR PRESERVING FOODSTUFFS IN YUGOSLAVIA. DEVELOPMENTS IN REFRIGERATION TECHNIQUES AND COLD STORE CON-STRUCTIONS DURING THE TWO WORLD WARS WERE ON A VERY MINOR SCALE AND THIS CREATED A CRISIS IN PRESERVING THE FOOD RESOURCES OF THIS COUNTRY. FIGURES SHOW THE GRADUAL INCREASE IN FOOD STORAGE TONNAGES FROM 1910 THROUGH TO 1984.
