Direct and indirect determinations of the giant magnetocaloric effect in Mn(1-x)Co(x)As compounds.

Summary

The structural, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of these (x = 0.003, 0.006, 0.01 and 0.02) compounds have been investigated by measuring X-ray diffraction (XRD), heat capacity at constant fields, isofield and isothermal magnetization, and direct measurements of the magnetocaloric parameters isothermal entropy change and adiabatic temperature change. The XRD at different temperatures shows that up to 2% of Co doping in MnAs does not change the structural transition from hexagonal NiAs-type to orthorhombic MnP-type and back to NiAs-type with rising temperature. The heat capacity at constant fields results reveal that the combined magnetic and structural transition takes place in the temperature range from 310.6 to 275.5 K on heating and from 298.4 to 251.7 K on cooling. The thermal hysteresis at 0 T increases from 12.2 to 23.8 K when x changes from 0.003 to 0.02.
