Summary
Energy storage solutions are crucial when moving to intermittent energy sources. Solid sorption heat pumps are advisable alternatives as thermal storage is inherently integrated by means of chemical bonds. In these kinds of systems, a reactor contains the reactive material which replaces the role of the compressor on conventional heat pumps. Therefore, the performance of the whole system mainly relies on the reactor which contains a reactive salt reacting reversibly with gaseous ammonia. Even if quality of mass and heat diffusion through the reactive material is crucial, salt intrinsic reaction kinetics ultimately governs the sorption rate of the ammonia gas coming from the evaporator.
This study focuses on an original approach to simultaneously characterize sorption rates, monitoring pressure and temperature working conditions, along with direct observation of the growth of the reactive salt at the grain scale. In order to do this, a numerical microscope (Keyence VHX 7000) was used and a special hermetic observation stage has been designed to work under anhydrous ammonia. Two working pairs have been characterized, namely CaCl2/NH3 and MnCl2/NH3. Obtained values of intrinsic reaction kinetics are around 10-3 and 10-4 s-1, which is consistent with those of other authors.
