Effects of different harvesting periods on the principal parameters characterizing ripening in kiwifruits.

Influenza della diversa epoca di raccolta sui principali parametri caratterizzanti la maturazione del frutto di Actinidia.

Summary

Fruits were harvested on 4 dates (2, 12 and 25 October and 6 November) from 10-year-old kiwifruit vines, weighed and analysed to determine their sugar and acid contents. They were then stored in a controlled atmosphere (1.5-2.0% oxygen and 4.5-4.8% carbon dioxide) for about 130 days. Total sugar content at harvest and at the end of storage increased as harvesting was delayed. Fruit firmness at the end of storage was greatest in fruits harvested on 12 October. It is suggested that fruit sugar content is the best indicator of harvest readiness as differences detected at harvest are maintained throughout storage.
