Summary
This paper focuses on the natural refrigerants which strongly contribute to the reduction of energy-consumption and significant reduction of the CO2 emissions. After March 11th 2011, when the great Tohoku earthquake caused massive tsunamis that crippled the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the supply of electrical power in Japan became unstable. The refrigeration and storage industry consuming lots of energy required urgently power savings. MYCOM has verified energy conservation in refrigeration plants – cold stores and freezers - using the NewTon products, which use environmental friendly natural refrigerants NH3 and CO2 as primary and secondary refrigerants respectively to provide highly efficient cooling systems for the refrigeration industry. The basic concept of the NewTon is explained in the paper with focus on safety – energy saving and easy maintenance. As field case a 200.000m3 cold store-logistic center located in Kawasaki City is presented based on Newton packages with overview of installed capacities (total 2700kW) at different temperature levels from -42°C up to 0°C, and different advantages related to energy saving, safety and operation. More than 650 packages are installed in Japan and energy conservation has been verified. About 67% of the installed Newtons are used in cold storages while 26% are used in freezers and the rest in ice skating rinks. The survey of newton systems in operation shows that compared to HCFC-22 systems the Newton reduces the power consumption by 25 to 30% in coldstores and 25 to 49% in freezers.
