Summary

AS THE TEMPERATURE OF FREEZING SEAWATER IS LOWERED, THE CONCENTRATION OF THE LIQUID BRINE INCREASES DUE TO ICE FORMATION. AN EQUATION IS ESTABLISHED FOR THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SALT CONTENTS AND TEMPERATURE. ANOTHER EQUATION, BASED ON TEST DATA, IS ESTABLISHED FOR THE VARIATION OF THE ENTHALPY WITH TEMPERATURE. THE DERIVATIVE YIELDS THE TRUE SPECIFIC HEAT WHICH CAN NOW BE EXPRESSED AS A TEMPERATURE FUNCTION. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THE SPECIFIC HEAT OF SEAWATER IN THE FREEZING RANGE IS CONSIDERABLY HIGHER THAN THE VALUES WHICH ARE CURRENTLY FOUND IN THE LITERATURE. F.L.L.
