Environmental problems and CFCs alternatives.

Author(s) : BILLIARD F.

Summary

Refrigeration is commonly used in most agro-food industries and in the logistic chain. Nowadays, a number of refrigerants which are utilized in these equipments are a concern because they are likely to deplete the ozone layer and to increase the global warming effect. UNEP and many countries decided to sign the Montreal Protocol for the protection of the ozone layer and its amendments of London and Copenhagen. Halocarbon refrigerants are also greenhouse gases because they absorb the remote infrared radiation. The Convention on Climatic Changes entered in force in March 1994. Its aim is to bring the level of greenhouse gases back in 2000 to what it was in 1990. The author details the possibilities for existing plants, and the axes of development for the new plants.
