Equilibrium between NH3 and cobalt chloride used in chemical heat pumps.

Summary

The reaction of ammonia with cobalt chloride was proposed for a particular chemical heat pump application in the agro-food industry. For this system, the solid-vapour reaction equilibrium data retrieved from the literature were all measured at pressures of 101 kilopascal or less. To extend these data, reaction equilibrium measurements were made at pressures greater than 101 kilopascal using an electronic thermogravimetric microbalance. The method consisted of measuring the weight of the solid as a function of temperature and ammonia pressure in the vapour phase. Hysteresis curves for the synthesis-decomposition combination was measured and related to dimensional changes as the solid expands during ammonia addition and retracts during ammonia removal.
