Summary

Cryocoolers with cooling capacity of 1-5 kW at 65 K are required to operate the high-temperature superconductors (HTS) power cables. In this paper, an RBC for cooling of HTS cables is analysed and optimized using Aspen HYSYS V8.6®. Exergy approach has been adopted to analyse the RBC. The optimization problem developed based on exergy efficiency maximization. Three load conditions of 1, 3 and 5 kW at 65 K with neon and helium as working fluids have been considered. Additionally, the effects of variation of operating parameters on the performance of the systems were identified, and the effects of turbine and compressor efficiencies and heat exchanger effectiveness have been studied. As a result, the cycle configurations with optimum process parameters have been identified and presented in this work. The conclusions of this article will be helpful in deciding modification in basic different cooling loads.
