Summary

Liquid-refrigerant return was divided into four cases on the basis of liquid refrigerant amount from an evaporator. Experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of liquid refrigerant return on the performance of a water chiller unit and a rolling rotor compressor. The results indicate that the refrigerating capacity increased by 6-10% and the COP increased by 8-16% for liquid refrigerant return with 0 superheat compared with the case in which the temperature difference was above 0. The system performance decreased with an increase in the amount of liquid-refrigerant return. The low liquid-refrigerant return amount would reduce the discharge temperature and enhance oil return effectively. In addition, the wear of the moving parts would be serious and the discharge valve life would decrease in the compressor when the amount of liquid refrigerant return reached a critical value.
