Summary

The paper illustrates the results of an experimental research, carried out within a collaboration between the Dipartimento di Energia, Politecnico di Milano and Carrier Spa of Villasanta (MI), which deals with the analysis of the performances and of the operating limits of an air to water heat pump of nominal capacity equal to Q = 11 kW (measured according to UNI EN 14511) manufactured with three different technologies of scroll compressor, one of which is a vapour injection scroll compressor, with the aim of analysing their performances and their working envelope. The scroll compressor tested are: a scroll compressor designed for air conditioning applications, working with R410A, that is the reference technology; a new generation of compressor, working with R407C, specially designed to operate up to low evaporation temperature; a vapour injection scroll compressor, also working with R407C. Tests are carried out at different working conditions up to air dry bulb temperature equal to t(BS) = -15°C and up to outlet water temperature equal to t(W,OUT) = 65°C. The analysis of the obtained results allows to compare the different compressor technologies and to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the different solutions. Moreover, it is worth specifying that the illustrated results are related to a first prototype of scroll compressors that work with R407C not yet optimized for the specific application. A second experimental campaign on an optimized compressor is still being carried out as of the time at which the present paper is being prepared. To date, obtained results are better than those indicated here and they will be soon published.
