EXPERIMENTAL REFRIGERATED POTATO STORE.

ENTREPOT EXPERIMENTAL POUR LE STOCKAGE DES POMMES DE TERRE SOUS FROID.

Author(s) : URBAN B.

Summary

AN EXPERIMENTAL POTATO STORE WITH 2,100 TONS STORAGE CAPACITY WAS BUILT. ONE THIRD OF ITS CAPACITY IS REFRIGERATED BY AN AUTOMATICALLY OPERATED REFRIGERATING SYSTEM. THE REST TWO THIRDS WERE MERELY ACTIVELY VENTILATED WITH AMBIENT AIR. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT EVAPORATION AND RESPIRATION LOSSES OF POTATOES IN THE REFRIGERATED STORE SECTION WHERE OPTIMUM TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY CONDITIONS ARE MAINTAINED, COULD BE REDUCED BY ALMOST 3% AS COMPARED WITH ONLY VENTILATED SECTIONS. ELECTRIC POWER CONSUMPTION DURING 6 MONTHS WAS ABOUT 34 KILOWH/TON AND THE AIR QUANTITY SUPPLIED AMOUNTED TO 25 M3/H AIR/M3 OF POTATOES.
