Summary

Study on the osmotic properties of cells in the presence of cryoprotectant facilitates the design of cryopreservation protocols. In the paper, the osmotic properties of human cord blood stem cell are experimentally studied with a diffusion chamber. The inactive volume of human cord blood stem cell is determined to be 52 plus or minus 7%. With an Arrhenius assumption, the permeability to water at reference temperature 0°C is determined, and also the activation energy. The permeability to dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at room temperature and corresponding activation energy were studied. The presence of DMSO was found to decrease the permeability of the cell membrane to water.
