FABRICATION AND PERFORMANCE TEST OF ON-FARM MOBILE PRECOOLING UNIT FOR TROPICAL FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.

Summary
A MOBILE PRECOCOLING UNIT WAS DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED FOR IMPROVED HANDLING OF FRESH TROPICAL FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. PERFORMANCE DURING PRELOADING AND LOADING CONDITIONS WAS EVALUATED. TESTS WERE DONE ON TANGERINE FRUITS, USING THE METHODS OF FORCED AIR AND HYDRA-AIR COOLING. SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE AT PRELOADING CONDITIONS WERE OBTAINED WITH RESPECT TO CONTROLLER FUNCTIONS. START-UP TIME OF ONE HOUR WAS NEEDED TO STABILIZE COOLING CONDITIONS TO 5 AND 10 DEG C FOR WATER AND AIR, RESPECTIVELY. TEMPERATURE VARIATION OF ABOUT 1 DEG C WAS OBSERVED, AND A FIXED WATER VOLUME OF 6 M3/MIN WAS EASILY ESTABLISHED. TESTS SHOWED THAT HYDRA-AIR HAD FASTER COOLING RATE THAN THE FORCED AIR COOLING METHOD. FURTHERMORE, FORCED-AIR COOLING REQUIRED THE LONGER HALF-COOLING TIMES OF 79.0 AND 94.5 MINUTES FOR BOTTOM AND TOP LAYERS, RESPECTIVELY, WHILE HYDRA-AIR COOLING HAD HALF-COOLING TIMES OF 18.1 AND 5.5 MINUTES FOR SAME COOLING REQUIREMENT.
